Initial situation

After competitors introduced the first digital cameras in 1995, Olympus followed suit in 1996 with three top models. We supported the Olympus team for the first time in 1996 at the photokina photo and imaging trade fair and subsequently worked for them for more than 20 years.

Task

To help Olympus Europe catch up with its competitors in the field of digital photography and establish itself as an opto-digital photography specialist, in contrast to its competitors, most of whom came from the CE/IT sector.

Implementation/Results

The goal was achieved within a few years: We supported Olympus in becoming the market leader in digital photography – with the help of a large number of other agencies. Within just a few years, Olympus became the market leader in digital photography, selling two million cameras across Europe in the 2000/2001 financial year. Within the company, Olympus achieved the same turnover with its digital cameras as with its analogue models.

After photokina 1996, we initially worked on a per-project basis for Olympus Europe. From 1999, we were commissioned by the European headquarters to create various consumer websites and, in 2001, the European corporate website in fifteen languages (relaunched in 2003) as well as PR materials for more than thirty country organisations, including press releases in the respective national languages, PR photos, PR events, (annual) press conferences, newsletters, presentations, etc. We also relaunched the international employee magazine (Olympus Transfer) and produced the bilingual customer magazine (Olympus Echo).

We were the external press office for Olympus Imaging Germany for over a decade. We were responsible for media relations, test equipment management, cooperation with photographers and the organisers of photo exhibitions. From 2013 to 2019, we also managed PR for the Olympus Photography/Perspective Playground, an immersive photo event series created by Vitamin E that attracted almost one million visitors in ten major European cities and in Zingst on the Baltic Sea.

On 1 January 2021, the newly founded OM Digital Solutions Corp. took over Olympus’ consumer division. We helped this company establish a PR solution with its own team.
